What we do

Business valuation services across five practice areas

Valuation Advisory provides independent business valuation services across five practice areas: tax planning, matrimonial and shareholder disputes, insurance claims, M&A and MBO, and financial reporting. We are an ICAEW-regulated firm with over 20 years’ experience, valuing companies, shares, share options and intangible assets for HMRC, the courts, commercial transactions and financial reporting. We work for business owners, professional advisers, private equity firms and legal teams across the UK. Whatever your reason for needing a valuation, we deliver clear, well-reasoned opinions that withstand scrutiny – on a fixed fee, with most engagements complete in two to four weeks.

Defensible company and share valuations for HMRC – EMI share options, Employee Ownership Trusts, Family Investment Companies and growth shares, restructuring and capital gains tax, inheritance tax and Business Property Relief, probate and ERS reporting. We have a track record of valuations agreed with HMRC.

Matrimonial disputes icon

Matrimonial & shareholder disputes

Independent expert witness valuations for matrimonial and shareholder disputes – FPR Part 25 and CPR Part 35 compliant, with significant Single Joint Expert experience and oral evidence in court. Common matters include divorce, unfair prejudice petitions, shareholder buyouts, partnership disputes and compulsory purchase orders.

Insurance claims icon

Forensic valuations quantifying business interruption and loss of profits claims, instructed by insureds and their solicitors to support negotiation or formal dispute. We are valuation specialists and work alongside forensic accountants.

M and A / MBO icon

M&A / MBO

Independent buy-side and sell-side valuations for M&A and management buyouts of any size, including earn-outs – no advisory bias and no conflicts of interest. We provide the valuation; wider deal mechanics are referred to forensic accountants.

Financial planning icon

Financial reporting

Audit-ready IFRS 2 share-based payment valuations of share options, EMI awards, growth shares and other share-based payments, for audit firms, in-house finance teams and larger-firm referrals.

Types of valuation we provide

We value companies, shareholdings, share options and intangible assets, and our work falls into two broad types. Contentious valuations are prepared for a dispute or claim – a shareholder or matrimonial dispute, or an insurance claim – and must withstand scrutiny from opposing parties, opposing experts and the court. Non-contentious valuations support a tax position, a transaction or a financial reporting requirement, and need to be clear, defensible and pragmatic. We provide both, applying the appropriate basis of value and approach – earnings, discounted cash flow or net assets – to the facts of each case.

It depends on why you need it. Tax and HMRC matters (EMI, EOT, FIC, IHT, probate, CGT, ERS) sit under tax planning; disputes and expert evidence under matrimonial and shareholder disputes; business interruption and loss of profits under insurance claims; buying or selling a business under M&A and MBO; and IFRS 2 share-based payments under financial reporting. If you are not sure, get in touch and we will point you to the right area.

Every engagement is scoped to its facts, so we don’t publish a price list. We send a clear, fixed-fee proposal up front before any work starts, with no open-ended hourly billing.
